VIBC Welcomes New Board Members

At our AGM on Nov 27, three stellar individuals—Kiran Dhaliwal, Anne Murphy, and Raj Arneja—were nominated and then appointed new members of VIBC’s board. Below are their profiles; stay tuned to this space for future features on other amazing VIBC directors: Kiran Mander, Vishal Hiralal, Sonny Dhillon, Malina Parmar, Sukhi Ghuman, Mark Marissen, Mandeep Patrola, Manpal Rana, and Milan Singh.

Kiran Dhaliwal
Kiran is a lawyer who has been a dedicated volunteer all her life, working for such organizations as the Crane Resource Society, Amnesty International, and the local chapter of Soroptimist International, as well as VIBC. Her strong belief in “paying it forward,” as well as the joy she takes in contributing to society by helping others to achieve success makes her a wonderful addition to the VIBC board.

Anne Murphy
Anne is Associate Professor in the Department of Asian Studies at UBC. She teaches and conducts research on the cultural and religious history of Punjab and South Asia, with a special focus on the Sikh tradition, and on Punjabi and South Asian vernacular literatures. Modern Punjabi theatre is a new passion. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University, and previously taught at The New School in NYC. She is originally from New York City, and lives in Vancouver with her husband, artist Raghavendra Rao K.V., and two children. We welcome Anne to the board, and look forward to receiving the benefit of her experience and passion for sharing knowledge.

Raj Arneja
Raj is the Director of Corporate Engagement & Philanthropy at Nanak Foods. Born into an immigrant family and raised in New Westminster, BC, she enjoys supporting and fundraising for various charitable, non-profit community organizations. She volunteers her time with local homeless shelters, has been an advocate for anti-bullying campaigns, supports two girls’ orphanages in Punjab, and has travelled to Kenya to volunteer in small village schools with her two children. Raj strongly feels that humanity has no borders, and we should reach out and help wherever we can, regardless of race, gender, or nationality.

Raj works hard at building relationships within the community through her work at Nanak Foods. She directs the company's philanthropic endeavours, as well as the operation of all corporate contributions. Raj began her career as a Treasury Administrator in Precious Metals and Foreign Exchange Trading at Citizens Trust. Later, she became a Travel Executive at Thomas Cook and then a Tour Manager at Indus Travels. Raj brings grace, passion, and expertise to VIBC, and we are fortunate to have her as part of the family!
