VIBC Loves PechaKucha!

20X20, naQsh IPB, PKN, Cause+Affect, HUMANS. No, you haven’t entered an alternate universe, but you HAVE entered the world of PechaKucha Night Vancouver! The latest installment of this worldwide cultural phenomenon took place at the Vogue Theatre on February 19, and we’re so happy that City of Bhangra Festival favourite naQsh IPB (Indo-Pakistani Band) took part that night.

Presented four to five times a year in Vancouver by leading local branding and design agency Cause+Affect, PechaKucha Nights are informal and fun gatherings where creative people to meet, show their work, and exchange ideas on just about any topic imaginable. The trick is, presenters need to keep the standard PechaKucha format, known as 20x20, meaning they can show a maximum of slides for only 20 seconds each—6 minutes and 40 seconds total—and there’s no turning back. This keeps the evening fast-paced and fun for the speakers and audience alike; once the action starts, it just never stops!

PechaKucha Night (PKN) was devised in Tokyo in 2003 by an architecture firm called Klein-Dytham Architecture, and has since been gifted to over 700 cities around the world. (PechaKucha means “chit chat” in Japanese.) Thanks to local organizers Cause+Affect, more than 400 creative Vancouverites have inspired thousands of audience members over the past five years with their ideas, enthusiasm, and passion for the world around them.

Vancouver PKNs usually include a random lineup of speakers, giving locals a sampling of ideas and innovations from all over the map. Recently, however, Cause+Effect worked with their friends from Secret Study to open a PechaKucha Night with musical guests, and the response from the audience was overwhelming! To reflect Vancouverites’ obvious passion for music, and to showcase the city’s incredible range of talented people making, producing, and promoting music, Cause+Affect decided to open up their next event to all genres of music and all parts of the music industry. They wanted musicians, producers, promoters and educators of every genre and culture they could find, and they wanted the evening to be cross-cultural and cross-generational, reflecting the amazing beauty and talent of the city we live in.

The result took place Thursday, February 19, and was dubbed PechaKucha Night Vancouver “The Musical!” As mentioned, Vancouver’s awesome naQsh IPB (whose new studio single “Armaan” is available on iTunes now performed that night alongside other artists such as Tarun Nayar (Delhi to Dublin), Heidi Krutzen (harpist and humanitarian), Chin Injeti (Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer), and the amazing HUMANS.

Hope you had the opportunity to listen and learn from some of the most amazing musicians in our midst. And thanks to our friends at Cause+Affect for working with VIBC to cross-promote this special evening and our upcoming City of Bhangra Festival (May 28–June 6).
