Disorienting BhangraJoin this panel discussion as panelists talk, argue and question what Bhangra is and what it means today in a North American setting. This unique panel of scholars, students, dancers and musicians will discuss how and why Bhangra is performed and its relevance outside of Punjab.

Bhangra is a type of music and dance that originates in the Punjab regions of India and Pakistan. The discussion will include dialogue about the origins of Bhangra and how the art form has changed over time, how this dance and music is being performed by second and third generation youth in the Diaspora, and the meaning and relevance of authentic or traditional Bhangra.

 

 

 

 

Panelists for Disorienting Bhangra include:

  • Gibb Schreffler, M.A., Ph.D. Cand. and Ethnomusicologist with the University of California Santa Barbara
  • Ashveer Singh, Anthropology student at University of California Berkeley and competitive Bhangra dancer with Davis di Dynasty
  • Sanjay Seran, lead singer with Delhi 2 Dublin and Signia
  • Jora Nijjar, dancer and co-founder of UNITED Bhangra dance team

The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Anne Murphy, Assistant Professor with the Department of Asian Studies and Chair in Punjabi Language, Literature, and Sikh Studies at the University of British Columbia.

This event is part of the VIBC's City of Bhangra Festival, presented by Bell, taking place February 29 to March 8, 2008. Events listings are available at www.vibc.org.
