VIBC’s Coast Capital Bhangra Competition Teams Announced

After much deliberation, lots of food and plenty of misunderstandings, the teams have finally been chosen. Congratulations to the participants of the Coast Capital Bhangra Competition!

We thank all the teams who applied to be a part of our 4th annual competition. Catch these amazing teams as they compete for top prize on March 8 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Tickets go on sale later this month at Ticketmaster, Kamal’s Video Palace, Tasleem’s Video and Anmol Video.

Malkit Singh to Perform at the Coast Capital Bhangra Competition Live March 8, 2008 @ Queen Elizabeth Theatre

Malkit Singh and the Golden Star group is performing live at the Bhangra Competition (now called the Coast Capital Bhangra Competition) and the Official City of Bhangra After Party.

Malkit Singh was recently awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) and is listed in the 2000 Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest selling Bhangra artist of all time. The man with the midas touch has released over twenty-one albums, and is known for hits like Hey Jamalo, Gur Nalo Ishq Mitta, Chal Hun, Punjab Mera, Kurri Garam Jayee, Aaj Bhangra Paoon Nu Jee Karda, Jugni and Mitte Ghane, and many more.

Name: Jasmine Garcha
Specialization: Performer Services
Most Recently: The NEXT Bhangra Competition Committee

Jasmine Garcha is a student at SFU who manages schoolwork, her interests and her passions. She believes in the importance of time management and brings her expertise in Bhangra to the VIBC Society. As an active member in the VIBC NEXT Bhangra Competition team, she brought the perspective of the younger generation to the planning committee. As a Bhangra instructor, Jasmine understands how important it is for the youth of today to be able to showcase their talents.

"I just love Bhangra; I can’t think of any other way to say it. The VIBC Society allows me to work with a great group of people who have become not only my resources and friends, but also my support system. I joined the Society not only to promote Bhangra and educate people about this art form, but also to be a part of an organization of young professionals who are doing something for the greater good."

Jasmine is also a figure skater and if she’s not on the ice practicing, she’s teaching others. She continues to volunteer with VIBC so that she can teach the next generation the importance of culture, art and an active lifestyle.

Learn to Move to the Beat at Bhangra 101!

Hear the music but can’t seem to get your feet to go to the beat of the drum? Join us at Bhangra 101, a series of workshops that teach you the basics of Bhangra dance, during the City of Bhangra Festival, presented by Bell. The workshops will be instructed by trained dancers, who will teach you the basics and make your friends jealous of your moves.
