This year, VIBC’s City of Bhangra Festival is committed to sharing the stage. We are focused on providing a platform to push boundaries in terms of gender and sexuality—it’s about time we support artists and create space for conversations around gender politics and the barriers women and queer artists face.
Bhangra: SHE is about artistic expression and dialogue. Through their stories, we explore how we can connect with our cultures and communities, and to each other through bhangra.
At Bhangra: SHE, our artists will share their experiences in the media industry, such as breaking into the Punjabi and Bollywood entertainment market, and producing guerilla films. Our artists will talk about the power of voice and reflect on what it’s like to be female and/or queer artists in the music industry.
Our artists are fierce and use their performance as a way to challenge discrimination, to make space, and to incite change.
Presented with TD Bank Group, Bhangra:She is hosted by Angelina Rai, and features Horsepowar, KayRay, DJ Maieli, Ms. Mutta, Jasmine Sandlas, and Malinder Tooray. The event is free, and takes place on Thursday, June 16, 5-9pm at KPU, Surrey. For more info or to register, click here: http://bit.ly/1SI3MJg. Thanks to venue sponsor KPU.
