It's time for a change. We can do better.

For years now, VIBC has been working to further the cause of diversity and inclusion by using music and dance as a means of bringing together disparate people and stitching together a sense of belonging and community. We've had some great successes and truly inspiring relationships born out of our work.

But, we can do better.

We had to take a long hard look at ourselves in 2012. We just had entered into a relationship with HSBC Bank Canada as the presenter of our City of Bhangra Festival, we had just expanded our program into Surrey – heck, we even got a Gaming Grant from the Province! But, in the midst of all this, there was this nagging feeling that for all of our talk of multiculturalism and diverse communities, we weren't doing a good job of it ourselves. A board comprised of 11 Punjabi Canadians and 1 delightful woman of Chinese descent doesn't really say much about our ability to reflect these values in our own organization.

In 2013 we've broadened the net and have approached some very talented professionals in our network of colleagues. We want to change the make up of our board and really get it right. We're aware that this may take some time, but you have to start somewhere. The first part of that is to enhance our own diversity by doing a better job of looking like the community we operate in (banks typically do a great job of this). The second part of the equation is to ensure we create an inclusive organizational culture, where everyone feels engaged and truly involved in the conversation. As you might imagine, this second part is much harder to achieve. It's so much easier talking to familiar people who are cut from similar cloth and get the same inside jokes – but, it's worthwhile to stretch and push ourselves beyond our own comfort zone.

If you or someone you know would be a good fit for VIBC's Board of Directors, please contact us immediately. Our annual general meeting is only 3 weeks away on Thursday, January 30th, 2013, but if we encounter the right candidates, we would be happy to nominate them at the AGM. VIBC wants to create an inclusive community through the shared experience of art and culture. Our future board members should want the same. All we need is an expression of interest and the details will follow.

Please contact our board secretary, Malina Parmar, at malina.parmar@vibc.org.
