The 2012 HSBC City of Bhangra Festival kicks off its first few events in Surrey starting May 31st
With a little over a week left to go until this year’s HSBC City of Bhangra Festival kicks off on May 31st, organizers and artists are getting ready and are excited to put on an extraordinary spice of entertainment that will bring together the likes of all ages, and groups of people!
The festival will fire up with a special performance of rePercussion excellence at the Surrey Arts Centre on May 31st at 7:30pm, an event that explores and amalgamates the depths of folk drumming in one space. The show will be led by Dr. Sal Ferreras, President Education and Student Services at Vancouver Community College and will also include talented performances by Israel Berriel, Paul Bray, Rayman Bhuller and Karn Bhuller, Cassius Khan, Celso Machado, Liam MacDonald, Francis James and the Smoky Valley Drummers, Oscar Soto, and the Surrey Folk Bhangra Club.
Keeping on the same side of the bridge, the next night, June 1st, a special Punjabi style “open mic night”, Mehfil Night will be held at the Bombay Se Restaurant. Performers and musicians alike will provide audiences with a rich experience of Punjabi folk stories, rhythms and musical compositions that provide the foundation – the soul – to the popular forms of Bhangra today. Leading to the free event, Celebrate the Harvest on June 2nd at the Central City Plaza from 3:00pm – 8:00pm.
These three events are just a taste of what the festival has to offer. For more information on the festival and the events that will be taking place, visit: http://cityofbhangra.com/
