Hello everyone! I am honoured to introduce myself as a new volunteer for the VIBC. I’m very excited to be joining the team on the eve of the VIBC’s 10th-anniversary City of Bhangra Festival. To me, the theme of this year’s Festival, #BhangraLove, symbolizes the all-encompassing, boundary-crossing power of bhangra to unite members of the community through art, dance, music, and song. It is certainly something I am proud to call myself a part of.
I myself have been involved in the arts from an early age. Along with music and writing, I have had training in various styles of dance throughout my life, including ballet, jazz, tap, and hip-hop. I am always actively seeking new forms of artistic expression and movement; bhangra in particular has intrigued me for quite some time. The vibrant, bright colours, energetic movements, and pulsing, rhythmic beats lend to the captivating experience of bhangra that has always enchanted me. So, I didn’t hesitate to jump on the opportunity to volunteer for the VIBC as a way to educate and immerse myself in all things bhangra!
As a self-professed “bhangra newbie”—like many of you may be!—I am excited to offer you a “newcomer’s perspective” on the sights, sounds, and culture of bhangra. Over the next few weeks, I will explore different aspects of bhangra, as well as the many other diverse styles of music and dance that will be featured in the Festival. I will discover bhangra’s potential to break down barriers and open up space for intercultural collaboration, acceptance, and artistic freedom. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or yet “uniniated”, I invite you to come along with me on my journey to the heart of bhangra!
