About the City of Bhangra

Vancouver

This gorgeous coastal city is renowned for its beautiful harbour, glass buildings, and amazing mountains. From sea-to-sky, this cosmopolitan city offers visitors the opportunity to stroll in one of its many chic shopping districts, take a harbour day cruise, ski at one of several internationally reputed ski resorts, and end the evening at a hip lounge in Downtown Vancouver.

First of its Kind

The VIBC is the first event of its kind in Vancouver, British Columbia. With a multi-week celebration, we're giving international performers the opportunity to experience and participate in the beautiful artform of Bhangra like they never have before. While visiting this city, and the culture it has to offer, you will be able to experience a series of events highlighting the art of Bhangra in all its forms.

Birth of the Festival

The VIBC began as the Vancouver International Bhangra Competition Society. This one-day event attracted talent from all over North America and a sold out crowd. This set the precedent for years to come.

In 2006, the Vancouver International Bhangra Competition Society became the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society, dedicated to bringing people from all walks of life together and promoting Bhangra. The event was re-named the "City of Bhangra" and expanded into a 2-day festival.

The next year brought the same Bhangra flavour to Vancouver with the addition of an art exhibit, dance workshops and the extension of the festival to a 5-day event. The City of Bhangra also introduced bhangra:authentic in 2007, a stage production providing the audience with an interesting and engaging look at the origins of Bhangra.

In 2008

This year is no different! The VIBC Society brings creative and innovative events to the City of Bhangra, with the addition of three new events: Transfusion, Disorienting Bhangra and the Drum Circle.

The VIBC Society is also thrilled that two City of Bhangra 2008 events, Transfusion and bhangra:authentic, have been chosen to be a part of VANOC's Cultural Olympiad. VANOC is the organizing committee for the 2010 Olympics taking place in Vancouver and Whistler. The Cultural Olympiad is an annual festival organized by VANOC to celebrate culture and Olympic Games in anticipation of the 2010 world event.

With each year, the VIBC Society sends the beats of Bhangra through the streets of Vancouver. Come be a part of the City of Bhangra and enjoy the experience!
