From our “Crash An Indian Wedding” kickoff party, to a “Where Not To Do Bhangra” comedy/burlesque night, to workshops for youth and club nights in unexpected places, we promise you 8 days and nights of pushing buttons and pushing boundaries through bhangra like you’ve never seen before.
Three Festival must-sees are outlined below: for the FULL schedule of events, plus ticketing info and performer bios, check http://www.vibc.org. And stay tuned for more stars, events, and surprise performances TBA!
Highlight #1 is our kickoff party on June 11: CRASH AN INDIAN WEDDING. No one’s actually getting hitched, but this is your big chance to put on your party clothes and dance the night away amidst the imaginary extravagance of an Indian wedding. Forget your inhibitions: everyone’s welcome to slip on a shimmering saree or kurta, pile on the jewelry, join the “baraat” (traditional Indian wedding procession led by a brass band), and dance, dance, dance to the beats of the best wedding DJs in the city. We’ll even show you some moves if you’re feeling shy… you can trust our bhangra experts to make you look GOOD on the dance floor! Look for more info to come on this lavish event, co-presented with Decibel Entertainment. Tix: http://bit.ly/1MPCIJ3
Our second event is set to break ALL the rules — it’s a night of bhangra burlesque at the infamous Rio Theatre on June 12. WHERE NOT TO DO BHANGRA brings you the best of Desi sketch comedy (think: I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter Chicken), plus music, dance, and drag. Featuring a host of talented performers, this gender-bending, genre-skewing, culturally totally INappropriate night is adults only for sure, and not for the faint of heart! Tix: http://bit.ly/26rUhW0
Third on our short list of highlights is BHANGRA: SHE on June 16, a FREE workshop for youth featuring six fearless young women sharing their stories of struggle and achievement on the way to success. As gay and straight activists and educators, DJs and producers, actors, rappers, and filmmakers, these women are ready to listen as well as to inspire you on your own creative journey to self-expression. Mix with top talent, get the inside scoop on the industry, and maybe even find a mentor! Presented by TD Bank Group; venue sponsor KPU. Register: http://bit.ly/1SI3MJg
